Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear O Isreal, the Lord our God He is One.” This scripture has been quoted to me many times years ago by Jehovah’s Witnesses and others who do not believe in the trinity (or tri-unity of God). This scripture was supposed to support their beliefs 1) in a solitary God (mono-theism), 2) that Jesus is not God, and 3) that the Holy Spirit is just a force and not a person in the Godhead. It is very interesting that many years later, I would do a word study of the word ONE in this particular scripture, just to find out that this scripture actually supports the triune nature of God.   There are 2 Hebrew words for “ONE” that could have been used here in Deut. 6:4 to describe God. The first is the more common word for “one” which is yachid (yaw-kheed’) .  It means one, only, solitary one, one singular, and only one. Here is a list of some of the literal translations of this word found in the NASB… lonely, only, only son, one and child, one, and only one.
